A Zener diode, also known as a Zener diode, utilizes the phenomenon where current can vary over a wide range while voltage remains essentially constant during the reverse breakdown state of a PN junction. This diode is a semiconductor device exhibiting extremely high resistance until it reaches its critical reverse breakdown voltage. At this critical breakdown point, the reverse resistance drops to a very low value. Within this low-resistance region, the current increases while the voltage remains constant. Zener diodes are categorized by their breakdown voltage. Due to this characteristic, they are primarily used as voltage regulators or voltage reference components. Zener diodes can be connected in series to operate at higher voltages, enabling the attainment of higher stable voltages through series connection.
When a semiconductor diode is conducting, it behaves like a closed switch (circuit connected); when it is cutoff, it behaves like an open switch (circuit disconnected). Therefore, diodes can be used as switches, with the 1N4148 being a commonly used model. Due to the unidirectional conductivity of semiconductor diodes, the PN junction conducts under forward bias, exhibiting very low resistance in the conducting state—typically tens to hundreds of ohms.
